I have a lot of parents reach out to me looking for training for their kids, and working with junior golfers and being able to be a part of their growth and development as golfers and as human beings is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.
Typically, I will start really working with kids around 12-14 years old. Now I have had kids younger than that come to me, and typically, I have the same recommendations.
The goal at a young age is to promote play, cross-training, and basic movement. athleticism and coordination.
Some of my favorite ways to do this are:
Playing multiple sports
Spend time running, jumping, climbing, crawling, kicking, throwing, you know, being a kid
Skipping, hopping, sprinting, jumping, and landing in all planes
Learning the basic movement patterns of a squat, lunge, push-up, row, and hinge which will all set the base for strength training when ready.
Get comfortable swinging the golf club as fast as you can
Once they hit the 12–14-year-old range, we still keep the play element but start to get a little more structured when it comes to strength and power training, and start to build some strength in those basic movement patterns while still training and building coordination and athleticism.
In high school, we then start to migrate into more true strength and power training, focusing on building more strength, progressing power training via jumps, med ball work, and speed lifts, and continue to push speed with a club in their hand, all while maintaining health and avoiding injury. This will start to look more like my adult training programs.
If you are looking for a program for your junior golfer, I have online and in-person options to fit everyone's needs and goals. Just reach out and let's chat to find out more johnpaul@guidrypt.com
